The Child Protection Division (CPD) administers programs related to crimes
against children and provides leadership and funding in the areas of enforcement,
intervention, and prevention. CPD promotes effective policies and procedures
to address the problems of abused, neglected, missing, and exploited children.
NATIONAL CENTER FOR MISSING AND
EXPLOITED CHILDREN (NCMEC)

NCMEC
is a congressionally mandated 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works
in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Juvenile
Justice and Delinquency Prevention. NCMEC serves as a clearinghouse for
information on missing and exploited children; provides technical assistance
to law enforcement agencies and members of the public; offers training
programs to law enforcement and social service professionals; distributes
photographs and descriptions of missing children worldwide; creates and
coordinates child protection education and prevention programs and publications;
coordinates child protection efforts with the private sector; networks
with nonprofit service providers and State clearinghouses on missing child
cases; and provides information on effective legislation to help ensure
the protection of children.
Since its establishment in 1984, NCMEC has assisted law enforcement
in more than 116,000 missing child cases, resulting in the recovery of
more than 94,500 children. Its CyberTipline, a reporting mechanism for
child sexual exploitation, has handled more than 340,000 leads. For more
